MONTHLY MEETING.

The ordinary monthly meeting of iho Waimea County Council was held yesterday. There were present: Crs. 'P. F'pst (chairman), T. Hewetson, A. P. Allporb, P. Fry, and H. Tunniclilf. FINANCE. Menzies) reported, inter alia, as follows :—Maitai riding: Lud river to llai Saddle: it was recommended that a portion of the Government subsidy b» spent in metalling and culverting on mo Jlat through \\ angamo.a to the llai Saddle. —Pole ford :It is. recommended that a 60ft truss span.be erected at a cost of £650. to £700. About 15 chains of new road formation will be necessary to give1 access to the bridge.— Nelson-Stoke road: It was recommended that this road be scarified and then given a coat of metal.—Wai*iti riding: Hans for the renewal of the bridge over Eighty-eight stream on main road are almost' completed. It is i-ecorn-meiided that a small portion of land be purchased from Mr. Martin in order to "give a better approach to the new bridge. The footbridge near Nesbitt's, Quail Valley, had been inspected with a view of converting same into a motor bridge, for which residents had subscribed towards the cost. —Motupiko riding: It is recommended that an old bridge near Rev. Mr Berryman's be rcplarod by a motor bridge, and that a similar bridge be erected over Newport's crek. Two new spans and some protection work will be required at Homan's bridge.—Wangapeka riding: A new bridge is urgently required at Cedar creek.' It is recommended that a new culvert be put in near Russ's. The site over the" creek near Price's (Stony Creek) has been found to be unsuitable for a bridge.—Motueka riding: Work on the Motueka bridge has been greatly hindered by want or regular cement "supplies. xVnew bridge of j about 10ft spnn is urgently required; at Tinpot Gully, near Knowles's. A new bridge site "has been selected over the Orinoco stream. The bridge over the Waiwhero stream needed renewing. Time has not permitted to lay off the work on Takaka hill to absorb tho Govornmpnt grant.—Motueka riding: It is i j recommended that the Government i frmnt cf £150 for Moutere Central road be spent on metalling Cemetery road. I Lower Moutere: Only the portion of : the road between the main road and I the cemetery has been legalised, so that the Government subsidy couM not jbe snent except between these points. ' Smith's bridge, on the main road, will require renewal at an ea.rly date. It is recommended that a wooden culvert

near Braeburn Post Office be' replaced by a concrete culvert.—-Moutere mudflat . road: The total expenditure to date, on this road is £276, but I suggest that another 300 cubic yards of metal be delivered to absorb the balance of the vote.-^A Render has been accepted for gravelling 157 chains of tke Mapua-Brontc road. It ih reconfmended that certain work be carried, out in improving Henderson's ditch. , The report, which was a. very comprehensive one, concluded with certain recommendations iv regard to roadmen and wage*. ' j

Arising out of the report, it was resolved to . apply for .■■.Government •grancs of £500 for opening up Grown , lands in the Lee Valley; and £300 for the Jimmy Lee bridge; that plans be ! prepared for bridges over Tinpot Gully j j and the Graham river; that the bridge) near the Rev Mr Berryman's be replaced by a-motbr bridge; that, a new bridge be erected over Cedar creek; that £150 i be expended on metalling Western road,! Moutere Valley; that a concrete cul- | vert replace the wooden one near Brae- \ burn Post Office; that application be I made for a Government grant of £100 for metalling Edwards's road. The portion of the report dealing with permanent and casual workmen! was deferred for further consideration; j and that dealing with increase in wages was approved. Arising out of the report, it was resolved that-repairs be carried out on Trass Valley road, and that the ditch1 in Pigeon Valley be widened. The report, as amended, was adopted. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Overseer (Mr. C. G. Stebbings) reported, inter alia:—Maitai riding: The dangerous part of the road near Bird's', Wangamoa, had been widened. —Wai-iti riding: Trass Valley requires some urgent repairs. The watertabio near Hcrton's, Pigeon Valley, requires to be widened. A new footbridge in Hoult's Valley, near Griffith's, is recommended.— Motupiko riding: Various works either completed or in hand were dealt with.—Waiigapeka riding: Some means should be taken to prevent flood water scouring the road near S. Quinney's, Glen road. Three footbridges are also required on the same road. The road between Hopgood's and Glen Rae Saddle should be metalled. Metalling is required between the Pearse and Graham rivers, and the bridge near Myttcn's, Lower Graham river, will soon require attention. —Motueka riding: The ford, at the Pokororo river will need substantial improvement. Several other matters which had been attended to were also detailed. —Moutere riding: The grader should again be put through the mudflat road., A new" culvert, "or small bridge, is required near Braeburn Post Office; and on the Moutere side of the Moutere hill the watertable should be cleaned out and scrub cleared off the corners. CORRESPONDENCE. Following correspondence was dealt with :— From Waipa County Council, re immigration policy to meet need of more workers for Doiu'nion industries. — Principle to be affirmed. From Tahuna Progressive Association, re ditch on east side of Tahuna and Annesbrook r.oad and culvert across Tahuna end of the. main road. —Engineer to report, and chairman and member for the district to discuss mat- , terVith residents. From Mr. Henry Hebberd, Wangamoa, declining to lease Council's property at Wangamoa. From Mr. E. €f. Moore, re renting Council's property at Wangamoa. —To 6e offered to writer for £5 a year, . Council to retain use of quarry on the property. ! From Mr/ Thomas Hiint, Wakefiela. complaining of delay in erection of traffic' bridge over Quail Valley stream. —Work to be proceeded with as soon as labour is available.

From Mr. J. T. Erougli, Pangatotara, re blackberries on Alexander Bluff road. —Owner of land to be given notice to remove noxious weeds. From Mr. H. R. Bowron, Sandy Bay, re bridges across road leading tt>. his" property. —Writer to be referred to Iliwaka Road Board.

From Messrs. L, and H. Inwood, Pangatotara, re' repairs to Bi'own Acre track. —Week's work' to be done.

From Mapua Fruitgrowers' Association, asking for information regarding the purchase of Stafford's bush, Ruby Bay," as a public reserve.—Left to clerk to 'supply information. From Farley Bros., asking permission to remove building along road, .and also to have ditch on Cook's road cleaned out.—Left to Engineer. From Messrs E. McKerral and Tlios. J. Wright, Tasman, re bad state of Baldwin's road.—Repairs to be carried out.

From Mr S. 'A. Quinney, Tapawcra, re raising bank of Glen Rae Creek. — Left to Engineer.

Front Messrs Pitt and Mqore, re flood water flowing;on to Mr A. Grindie's property, Kohatu. From Mr A. Newport, Korere, re gates leading from Mrs J. Palmer'sto the river.—Council lias no jurisdiction in the matter. From Motupiko Farmers' Union, re bad state of road between Fenemors Kill and'Tapawera.—Left to Engineer. From Mr Thomas, car driver, _ complaining of straying stock on Korere read.—Referred to ranger. , From Mr J. Balek, asking permisi sion to fence along the road boundary ioh his farm, Thorpe.—Granted. GENERAL. I \ Ngatimoti 'deputation consisting of] MessrsT Strachan. Tennent and Guy waited on the Council calling attention to necessary works required on the roads and bridges in the district. The chairman pointed out that most of the matters referred to by the deputation were already being attended to.
