CORRESPONDENCE.

CHEAP COAL VOll NELSON

(To the Editor of "The Colonist.") Sir, —Knowing that there is a deposit of good household coal within a mile or two of Nelson—at Enner Glynn— may I ask you to insert this letter touching upon the subject? I am suggesting that the Mayor and Councillors should interest themselves in this matter, in so far as endeavouring to municipalise the coal is concerned, as

this is one of those rare chances which do not offer themselves every day. I dare say Nelson requires more coal correspondingly than other towns of its Size, as we have our gasworks, which means extra absorption. Then why not endeavour to exclude the monopolist, •who will be ready to "jump in" without much inducement? If this deposit yielded 4000 tons before a fire caused operations to be suspended, and that amount was used locally, now that coal has advanced in price, like all necessary commodities, it ought to be a paying proposition to work it to-day. The matter should receive attention from the quarter indicated, and in that case I have no doubt that some movement would shortly ensue. Hoping others will add to. this letter any superior knowledge they may possess,— I am, etc., H. F. PORTER. Nelson, April 7th.
