SACRED CONCERT.

Last night, in the Theatre \Royal, the band of the 12th (Nelson and Marlborough) Regiment gave a sacred conceit in aid of the fund.to riieet the expenses of the band's forthcoming visit t-> Dunedin. The building, was packed. The band opened with the selection from Wagner's works which is to form part 1 of the contest music, and gave a splendid rendering of the difficult but magnificent music A trombone trio, "A Summer's Morn," followed, the players , being Bandsmen Sara, Whitweli, and ■ Estcourt, who acquitted themselves . well.. Mr J.'Parker, the champion cor- . netist, was the next to delight the audi- ■ ence. His solo was "11. Bacio" (L. ' Arditi), and of tins, he gave a magnificent rendering. In response to a persistent recall he .played "Tho Lost Chord" in a style not often met with in Nelson. Quartette No. 1 followed with "Operatic Gems," the four being Bandsmen W. Hughes, Grant, Hansen, and Lowe, and. later, Quartette No. 2 appeared, and played "Fidelio." the players being Bandsmen T. flardie, E«ed, Pogmore, and Day. There was L also a euphonium solo, "Jenny Jones," • excellently given by Bandsman J. I Lowe. A very pleasing feature of the evening's entertainment was the song Iby Mr Shaman, "A Sailor's . Grave." It called forth so many indications of admiration that Mr Sharman 5 responded with Tosti's 'Good-bye." A further.portion of the grand contest selection music was given by the band, namely that of "Roberto II Diavolo," and again high hopes were raised concerning the place the "band will occupy afc next month's contest. The National \nthem terminated the evening's entertainment. Lieutenant T. Hughes, the conductor, is to be congratulated on the high position the band promises to occupy at the contest. The members of the band leave Nelson on Thursday " morning by the Pateena en route for Dunedin.
