STATEMENT BY FRENCH PRESIDENT.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)

New York, Feb. 18. The "New York Times's" Paris correspondent interviewed M. Deschanel, the newly-elected President of the French Republic, who stated: "It is the union of the United States and France which will render the peace fruitful. I wish to thank America for all she did for France, economically militarily, and financially. France and America should remain united in order to establish a lasting peace. The first guarantee of right is a powerful everready France. Morally and materially we must see the Peace Treaty is completed and fulfilled. The League of Nations is the supreme guarantee for free peoples. France will overcome the difficulties pressing so hard upon her by enforcing all the 'clauses of the Treaty and developing her alliances of friendship and promoting complete union among all citizens of France. The first duty of everyone in Franco is to maintain a spirit of unity, and not weakly forget, for mere forgiveness is not only an insult to the past, but a menace to the future."
