CONSULTING ENGINEER TO BE
APPOINTED
At tho Nelson Harbour Board meet*ing yesterday, Mr. ll'. 0. iiamiiton moved that ihe iioard . appoint a consulting engineer to furnish a scheme of utu'ouur improve men i> to enable laige rtC^tiinors to i^-nci proauce at Neison for
tha world's -markets. In the course of •lijrf remarks he said that it was estimated that shortly there would De at irtiist o\jj,uo'o cuoos of appiea ou ue exported annually. This wc/uid -give a revenue of otb6 3 000 in wharrage alone, and would require 18 to ifO steamers, the pilotage dues for which would, amount to some thousands of pounds. Tho work wan o£ urgent importance.
Mr. R. B. Jackson seconded the motion, and said the sooner they got the harbour improvement and lucieased accommodation the bett-er.
The chairman (Mr. H. R. Duncan) m supporting tiie motiun, said it was urgently necessary that cool stores sJiuiiid also be erected at the Port in order that fruit might be expeditiously loaded when boats came. Mr. A. P. Allport also advocated the erection of cool stores at to it Nelson.
Mr. A. Gould said the fiuit industry promised to be one of the staple industries of Nelson, and they should do everything to support it. .me mution was carried unanimously.
It was then resolved that Mr. Cyrus Williams, engineer to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, be invited to come to Nelson and confer with the Board with regard to his possible appointment as consulting engineer.
