CONTROVERSY IN AMERICA.

Speaking in the Senate, Senator Lodge said that Japan was building a Far Eastern Empire, and some day would threaten the United States' existence. Senator Lodge moved that the German rights in Shantung should be restored to China. He declared that Japan was planning ultimate domination of China. Senator Lodge added: "Japan is steeped in Germanic ideas and regards war as a national industry." OS© tirged that a superior navy should be maintained in the Pacific. He declared that the United States was obliged to take her place in helping to maintain and preserve civilisation. In reference to China's position at Shantung, Sena* tor Lodge said, in illustration, "If Britain ? with her control of Canada, which is less rigorous than Japan's control of Manchuria, held the port of .New York, important American railways and important mines, the people of the United States would find thems<ilv.es at Britain's mercy in reference to their commercial relations with nt.her States." i
