Dr. Little, of Timaru, who has had Army experience—retiring with the rank of lieutenanti-colonel —has been appointed medical officer for the Blackball and Paparoa mining districts, in succession to Dr. Telford, who has accepted a Government position. ■ The death has occurred at Hataitai, Wellington, after a short illness, of Miss Edith Curtis, lately of the staff of the ferry steamer Maori. Miss Curtis was the second daughter of the late Mr. A. R. Curtis, formerly proprietor of the "Feilding Star." Nurse Violet Naish, eldest daughter of Mrs. Naish, Iticcarton, Christ- , church, and the late Mr. Pi. G. Naish, Springston, who was recently successful in passing her final examination at tho Christchurch Public Hospital, is now en route for Canton, China, as a, medical missioner for the New Zealand Presbyterianp Mission Board. Mr. Frank B. Bolt has been appointed Supervisor of New Business for tho Government Life Insurance Department, in succession to Mr. George Robertson, who recently retired on superannuation. Mr Bolt is the second eldest son of the Hon. \V. M. Bolt M.L.C., and in recent years was manager for the department m Otago. ' The 12th Regiment Band met last evening to bid farewell to Bandsman B. C Johanson, who is leaving for Palmernton North, where he will .enter into ' business. Lieutenant T. H. Hughes,. ■on behalf of the band, presented Mr Johanson with a gold albert), and spoke in eulogistic terms of t"he recipient's ■ work as a cornetist in the band. Other members and Mr Chafles Leaper, a Me honorary member, also spolse in glowing terms of Mr Johanson as a bandsman. Bandsman W. Reed was presented with an oak clock on the occasion of his marriage. The recipients suitably acknowledged the presentations. t The death at Petone of Mr. John Symons, at th age of 86 years, removes a figure favourably known in practically every New Zealand port. Tho deceased was the second man to qualify for an engineer's certificate under the provisions of the New Zealand Legislature Acts governing the examination of engineers. In addition, MivSyraons was the possessor of a master mari-nei-'s ticket. For some twenty years ho-served as engineer on the old steamer Stqrmbird, and he also, saw considerable service as a coastal pilot. Mr. Henry Holloway, a veteran journalist, died at Hamilton the other • day, aged 82 years. Ho arrived in Isew Zealand in 1863, and after a short experience at mining became associated in newspaper work with Sir Julius Vogel at Dunedin.
