STOKE SCHOOL TEACHER'S RESIDENCE.

— «»- ! DEPUTATION TO EDUCATION I BOARD. A deputation from the Stoke School. Committee, consisting of Messrs. W. H. and P.. "Ching, waited on the Education Board yesterday in reference to the condition of the teacher's residence. Mr. P. Ching referred to th& fact that as far back as 1917 application hud been made for improvements and the reports both from the Health. I Officer and the boards-building super- . visor had condemned the building as i being unfit for habitation: The comjimttee had found it impossible to ! secure another house. | Mr. W. H. Ching urged that the ! board should secure an adjoining half ; acre, at present vested in the Post Office, on which to erect a new teai cher s residence. Mr. Boyes said it was a disgrace to ask a teacher to live in the present residence. He suggested the Stoke i residents should send in a petition to the board asking that the half acre section should be secured. The chairman said that when a building had been condemned, it was. a matter for the department to rebuild, and not one for the board. The board had been urging this on the department. The suggestion of Mr. Boyes was a good one, and the board would give a petition on the lines indicated its strongest support. Mr. Boyes further suggested that at the meeting which was to be held at ' btoke that evening in connection with the matter an effort- should be made to obtain another site and offer it to the Postal Department in exchange for tha i one adjoining the school. ; After further discussion it was resolved to ask Mr Caughley, Assistant Director of Education, who will bo in Nelson to-day, to visit the teacher's residence and endeavour to have action taken in the matter on the lines sne~ gestcd by the deputation. In his monthly report the building supervisor stated that the residence required to be rebuilt, and that he considered it a most urgent requirement. . "*
