In the course of an address at a meeting of the Utility Poultry Club, Chrisiehurch, Mr J. B. Merrett, speaking of poultrymen's prospects, said that throe years ago he predicted that eggs would average 2s per dozen all the year round. That price would be reached this year, while three year's ago the price was only Is 3d. ' The prices at present being realised were a great . inducement to poultrymen to hatch as many chickens as possible this season. A Gisborne resident who had been away on active service for a somewhat lengthy period, arrived home by the Arahura last week, much toHhe surprise of many of his local friends, who, it now appears, had mistaken his name in the lenthy casualty lists, and had mourned his "passing West." To their gratification he.landed back halo and hearty. "We can only trust to luck and the glorious uncertainty of things," is the manner in which Mr J. McMahon Box, formerly of the Customs Office, New Plymouth,-concludes a letter from Niue, dated June 22nd. The following extracts from the letter are published in the "Taranaki Herald" : "We have had no mails from the outside world since •January 7th, when the Awanui arrived. She was wrecked on the 11th, and of course all outward mails remained on hand. Then the s.a.. Dawn came from ►Samoa to take off the shipwrecked crew hut, unfortunately, the postal authorities in New Zealand omitted to send the mails to connect. No other vessel has been since the '20th inst.. when the Jionnette arrived from Wellington with a bumper mail, and-as she leaves here ror I'risco, it will probably he some fame before any news will reach New Zealand about us. We have indefinite news about a contract vessel, but when she is due is a riddle. If she does not soon turn up things will go pretty bad with some of vs y as stores are exceeding- :•? l ow \, Even native food is scarce, and that adds to the- difficulties. However things will,come out-all right before we get down to the famine stag*e I should hope."
