The police intercepted .a letter addressed to Landru from Mademoiselle Dcs Champs, whom Landru met in a tube, half an hour before he was arrested. Otherwise she undoubtedly would have been another of his victims.
Dcs Champs is a pretty girl of 20 years with 'beautiful eyes. She told the police she immediately felt she could trust the handsome, black-bearded gentleman with extraordinarily fascinating eyes, amiable manners and sweet voice who offered' her a seat, and she could not resist when he asked her to alight at the next station, Landru adding, "I would give all my life for a minute's talk with" you alone." They talked together in the underground railway for a quarter of an hour. Landru professed love, and told her he liad a large fortune. jHe said, "Next week you will come in a motor car to my lovely villa in the country"
