ORTHODOX CHURCH AND THE POPE.
MASSACRE OF CLERGY,
APPEAL FOR INTERVENTION.
f Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)
Rome, April % The "Osservatore Romano" publishes correspondence between the Vatican and the Russian Bolshevist Government following upon the appeal of the Archbishop of Omsk to the Pope regarding Bolshevist outrages, including the murder of twenty Bishops and hundreds of priests, accompanied by the cutting off of their legs. Some were flayed alive.
Tchitcherin callously replied to the Pope's protest, and accused the clergy of hoarding food while the people were starving. It is the first occasion on which iho Orthodox Russian Church has appealed to the Pope. This will probably faciitate reunion.
