HUNGARY AND THE ALLIES.

GENERAL SMUTS' PROPOSALS,

A NEUTRAL ZONE.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)

'"mv w • London, April 8. The "Morning Post's" Vienna correspondent states that General Smuts's Note to the Hungarian Government proposed /a new line as the eastern limit for the Hungarian troops, adding that the Roumanians would be required to stand .still, making a neutral zone between the two armies, which would be occupied by troops of the four leading Entente Powers.

General Smuts promised that the arrangement would not prejudice Hungary's territorial claims in the peace settlement, and acceptance would undoubtedly lead to the raising of the blockade.

The Government replied that it would only accept under order. The suggestion was made that the limit be much farther eastward as defined by the November armistice, and also that the Soviet rule in the neutral zone must be not impaired;- It concluded by denouncing the solution of. territorial questions according to imperialistic conquests.

Hungarians and Czechs had a violent engagement at Ungvar. Several hundreds were killed.
