THE FELL MEMORIAL.

DEPUTATION TO THE CITY

COUNCIL

A deputation of citizens consisting of Messrs C. J. Harley, H. Baigent, and H. R. Duncan waited upon ' the City Council last evening in connection with the proposed erection of a memorial to the late Mr C. Y. Fell.

Mr Harley said the deputation represented a strong committee, which had been set up to establish a memorial to the. late Mr C. Y. Fell. The committee had agreed that the most suitable, memorial would be a drinking fountain in the City Council Reserve at Tahuna for the benefit of pleasure seekers. There was no water for the public at Tahuna, and it was felt that a drinking fountain would be a great boon to the people. To enable the water to be supplied to the fountain, it was- necessary to get the permission- of the Council to. extend the present water service. It was not intended to provide a water supply for Tahuna and the committee did not think it would be fail* to allow those who lived outside the town boundary to have the benefit..of the city water service. The late Mr Fell was one of the foremost citizens of Nelson for many years, and was Mayor of the city for five years. It would be a graceful act on the part of the city to erect in a public place a fitting memorial to one who had been such a respected citizen. As a graceful act, the Council was also asked to give generous assistance by extending the service. Mr Baigent, in supporting the request, said that the extension of the water to the City Council Reserve would !be a great convenience to citizens who were now dependent upon residents of Tahuna for water for picnicking purposes. Mr Duncan also supported the request It tae Council acceded to the wishes of the committee he was sure it would have the endorsement of citizens. The deputation then withdrew, the Mayor intimating that the decision of the Council would be communicated to the committee. •Cr- Gibbons expressed-iiis sympathy with the proposal, and suggested that the 3-in. mam which ended at Richardson street should bo extended to Tahuna. Cr. Carlisle, while recognising the necessity of supplying water for picnickers at iahuna, said he failed to see Bow! the Council could undertake to supply lahuna with water when they could not supply their own residents with a proper supply. . F The Mayor &aid that during the summer water for Tahuna had been taken from the-trough at the cliffs. Ifc w £ seated that £2 a day was being made! Ihe matter was referred to the comiMCtee.
