At last night's meeting oi: the City Council a letter waa read from Mr James Hart ? gasworks foreman, tendering his - resignation after forty years service, and thanking tip council for the courtesy and consideration always extended to him.

The Mayor eaid they knew that Mr Hart was advancing in years, and they JUoped he would long be spared to enjoy his retirement. Mr Hart had done excellent service. Ho regretted that the council had no superannuation scheme, but it wa« their duty to do something substantial in Mr Hart's case, and he would move that the resignation be accepted as from November Ist, and that Mr Hart be given twelve months' leave on full pay. Cr. Pettit said ho had had a longer experience of .Mr Hart than anyone else at that table, nnd he knew the value - liis services to ihe city. Jit was a smallminded ratepayer who would take exception to the treatment it was proposed to give Mr Hart. He seconded the resolution.

Cr. Marris paid tho city was losing a valuable and faithful servants and they could well afford to treat him liberally. The ;):as\vorks had benefited much by .Mr Hurt's resourcefulness and energy. The resolution was carried unanimous-
