OUTBREAK ON STSAMSII NIAGARA

Auckland, Oct. 12. A serious epidemic of influenza broke, out on the Niagara soon after the steamer left .Vancouver.- The total number of cases was 112 among th* crew and 7 among the passengers. On*>' member of the crew died as a result of bronchial pneumonia supervening. By x-iie time the vessel arrived at Auckland a large majority of the cases had nractically recovered, but it was necossary to remove 28 of the crew and 2 passengers for isolation and treatment. The influenza was of the common type, and mild in character, not beinoaccompanied.: with gastric disorders. --. Ihe crew and passengers were.obliged on arrival here to pass.through an inhaung chamber improvised by the District Health Officer, and the vessel was fumigated. A large European and American mail was sprayed with formalin. •
