MURCHISON COUNTY COUNCIL.

*Tiie.Murchison County Council met on the 21st inst. Present: Crs. Brown (chairman), Badcock, Lester, MonaKan MoGaa, and Thomson. ' Correspondence was dealt with as follows :-— From J. Booh, regarding wheat.— Resolved that .writer be instructed not to poison .the balance, but send only what is ready. From- Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards regarding hosnital fees.— Received. From Public Works Department, as to maintenance of roads.—Resolved that the Overseer prepare a careful estimate of the mileage of road to submit to the Department. Or. Badcock moved, seconded by Cr. Monahan, that the chairman sign and affix the seal ,to the tracing' consenting to closing a road and proclaiming poi> tion of new road a public road threugh section-2, block vi., Matakitaki survey district.—Carried. From the Farmers' Union, regarding; finger-posts on junctions of roads.-rr-To l>e informed that this county has attended to the matter. Counsel's opinions were read from Mr T. F. Martin, solicitor for the Counties Association. Cr. JUcCna- referred to the Lake track,' Braoburn to' Gowan road. Ho asked ' whether he could have slips, etc., clear-' r<] off the road. «p The chairman explained' that councillors had authority to spend up to £5 on urgent works between meetings of tlie council. Cr. McCaa referred to P. O'Connor's rates, and pointed out that they were practically doubled during his absence at the war.—lt was explained that this was duo to the re-valuation of the county being made. • ■; A deputation of members of the board of directors of the Murchisbn Dairy Company waited'on the council iv connection with the likelihood of Mr Hugh Fraser's leaving tho/district. Mr Main spoke for the deputation, and explained that, although they were not there at the_ request of the company, they were satisfied that it was advisable to wait on the council with a view to/having Mr Frasor's" salary raised by both the council and the company to retain hip services. ... • Mr Thomson stated'that he knew five out,, of seven of the directors approved Of the step the deputation was taking. This was seconded by Cr. Lester. The matter was held over till the next meeting. Cr. Monahan moved •that the law costs referred to be remitted, and this "was carried. Cr. Cr. lister referred to the fact that the clay was working through the metal near Morel's, and said he thought it should be attended to.—Resolved that tho overseer attend to the.matter. ~: Cr. Lester referred to,. Mueller's Greek,: bridge, and: said he thought •labour' was now available.—Overseer to be. reminded; . - ;

X. Or. Newman. referred to Newman's road. He had been over the road recently, and. thought it' might be advisable to have the vbush felled as soon as possible, especially as it is intended to put a telephone line through.-—Clerk to write to the Public Works Department. Cr. Thomson referred to the Rappahannock road, and moved that the lieRidont Engineer be written to.— Seconded by.Cr. Monahan and carried. It was resolved that rates be 'struck for the current year as follows: — General rate ?4d in the £ on mining property and 3d on other property, besides the special rates of one-sixth and one-quarter of a penny m the £.' On the motion of Crs. Badeock and Monahan it was resolved that the chair-imin-caH a public meeting to deal with Library matters. ' " ; , The chairman wps authorised to pay accounts when certified by the overseer. The. next ordinary meeting is to be held on, Saturday, October 26th. v - A deputation waited on the Council 'regarding-.-Medical- Association matters. Cr. Badcock moved that this Council .make up any required deficiency of the Medical Association for the 'current year, provided that all, or nearly all. the'members of the association have I paid their, subscriptions.—Seconded by Cr. Monahan and carried.
