NELSON DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING

Tho .annual meeting of the Nelson Defence -Rifle' Club was held at ~Stallard's rooms on Friday, when the chair was taken by Mr.' T. A. H. Fie^i,,: The president (Mr. J. W. Milroy), in the seventh annual report, stated :—

The official opening of the season took place on October 13th, 1917,- -with a 1 competition for a trophy gm&a by tho Mayor (Mr. W. W: Snodgirass). The comi>otition was won by that camsi&tent shot, Rifleman R. Keniiing.. During the season 24 Saturday and 16' Wednesday competitions were held, i^e following trophies were won outrfent:— C/lub Championship^ won %'-ttie president; (J. W..-j4ilroy), with 762 points, out, of a possible of 820; ■" .runner-up vice-president, F. Gt GlediuH,'- |47: third place, Rifleman H. Day, 740. Handicap Aggregate: Rifleman T. Carter, 758 points, 1; S". Barnett; ZSB points, 2; J. Manssen, 757 points, 3. The finish for this aggregate was very close and interesting. Carter scored more points off the rme than Barnett, and takes first place. Mrs. J. Anstice's trophy was won by Rifleman S. Barnett;. Mr. C. Curnow's", •by Rifleman W. A. Mitch en er: Mr. .1. Both of those gentlemen took a keen interest in the. club, and every year had given valuable trophies, an'dj had often presided at our annual meetings. "Wreaths and letters of sympathy were sent to the relatives.

On .active service wo have two ">atrons, Dr. V. H. Barr and Dr. W. I>. S. Johnston. 'Wsere are also 23 members on active service. One of our members, Private J. McLean, has won | the Military Medal. Ten are in or about to proceed into camp, including some of our best and most enthusiastic shots. The thanks of the club are due to the followiug donoars of trophicsI:—The late Hon. A. T. Although there are a large number of our younger members oil active service, we still have a good number of old members who can shoot well. They have stood to the club since its formation, and it is their wish and .determination to hand over a live club to our young men when they return from the war. I desire to thank the officers and committee for assisting me to carry on smoothly throughout my term of office. The balance-sheet showed the club to be in a very satisfactory position. Holland, and J. Manssen; selection committee, Messrs, J. TV. Milroy, F. G. Gledhill and R. Kenning; auditor, i Mr. R, Catley. A discussion took pjace concerning the range, and it decided to ask the Government to push on with the range, the property, for which they have already acquired. Trophies were presented, and the meeting terminated with a hearty vote of thanks to the press and. the chair.
