Mr Lansing, Secretary of State^ made a statement that the President will reply to the Austrian Noto, refusing a conference.

The President says the United States has repeatedly and with candour stated the terms on which she is prepared to consider peace, and. she will entertain -no proposal for a conference upon a matter upon which America has already made her position and purposes so plain.

Mr Taf t, commenting on the Austrian peace proposals, said they are not only laughable, but ridiculous1.
