STRIKE IN AMERICAN PAPER MILLS.

MAY CRIPPLE PRESS

A New York exchange, of July 27th, says:—

In view of the very great interest tho people m this country now have in the operations on tho Western front in Franco, it is obvious that the daily newspapers of this country need every pound of news print paper wElch they can secure.

The normal daily production is to-day insufficient to nicet these demands. Many newspapers have reserve stocks in storage, but tiiere are many others without reserve stocks, r.-id ihoir position is more or less c-iib<«r"f^sinp;, dopenrling upon shipment a tiirough without delay. The recent walk-out on the part ol tmion labour' in news print mills still further embarrasses the situation. In fact, if the men do not go back to work' at once, the situation will be very serious in many offices. If the men clo not Igo back to work, there will be a daily loss m production of 1030 tons If the walk-out extends-to still other mills the loss of tonnage will increase to just that extent.

The labour situation is in the hands

of the War Labour Board at Washington, and, we are advised that notwith-; standing the orders1 from the War' Labour Board to the men to go back to work they had, up to Thursday, .refused to obey these orders To what extent it may be practical to rc-distri'bute the storage stocks now in the hands of publishers to relieve those without reserve stocks is a problem that will demand and receive' itho attention of the Washington ati-■ tJioiitics provided the men who have' walked out do not immediately return to their work.

Whatever may be in the minds* of the men who have gone out. wo do not know, but we believe that their course is meeting with the enthusiastic applause of the Kaiser IWIi 1'? adv}**Lfo** Kw TVar Labour Losud has refused to take up any further adjustment of wages until affer the men have returned to work
