London, Sept. 5. ! A French communique reports:— I During the night we maintained contact with the enemy rearguard, and advanced east of the Canal-du-Nord, and in the direction of the Aisne, east of Nesle. . . ; We crossed the Somme Canal in the region of Boyennes and Offoy. f " Further south' we passed Monbleux, Esmery, Hellon, Flavyle, Melleux, and carried our lines north of Guiscard to the outskirts of Berlancourt. Between the Ailette and the Aisne we carried Damoney, Braye and Nissy-sur-Aisne.. Last night we repulsed two violent counter-attacks on Mont-dcs-Tombs, east of Leuilly, and maintained our positions. On the Vesle front the French and American troops on the crest of the heights are-dominating the.-Aisne, and we are extending our action still further. We also crossed the Vesle between Lesvan-Teaux and Jonne-Tery.
