A generous offer was made tG the Minister for Defence at Dunedm by a deputation representing the Heel Cross Society or Otago and "Southland. it took tiie form of a proposal to establish, equip, and maintain an auxiliary Hospital at Diinedin for returned ?olciiers, the institution-to start v.itii 20 or more beds, and the society .to undertake- all financial responsibilities. _ The Rev. Br. Iving esplainad that there v.as congestion at tiio Dunedin Hospital on account of men whose cases are not acute having to be kept there. The new hospital would serve as a sort of midway institution, coming between the hospital and the men's homes. For a further reason the society thought it would be a good tiling to be able to see a little more of the returned men. tit •had no doubt the funds wotild come. .They only asked the Government a appoint a matron, but if they could get the hospital allowance of 14s a week, so much the better. Sir James Allen thanked the society for the offer, and said that he would have to consult Surgeon-General Henderson before giving a reply.
