A KIND AND THOUGHTFUL ACT.
The following letter to a.Dunedin resident, dated Claremont, Cape Town, August 18, 1917, speaks for itself:— Dear Mrs B .—You will be surprised at hearing from a stranger, but | J. have a message uf good" cheer for you j from your boy, Lance-sergeant , whom I had the pleasure of meeting yesterday. I thought that you wouid like to know that he was looking very [ fit indeed, and was in excellent spirits, 1 1 thought. Ho wished me to tell you I that they had had a very rough pas- ' sage, but that everything was all right, j You may wonder how l"met your son. I Well, my coiioin and 1 saw him with' I his triend, Sergeant , standing ' about the town, and we just invited. j them to tea with us. You see, my un- j ; cle, a brother, lots of cousins., and my! j ikince are all on active service, and j i have been for a long time. We know I i how lonely they sometimes feel, and | how they ~ would love a friendly word ; ifrom homely folk, and so we otten try | Ito do to those who pass through our; city the little tilings which we hope others will do for our boys. That is why we were so bold as to speak to ! your son. without an introduction, j Have we your pawn? What a splendid lot of men New Zealand -lias sent. I wish our land could boast of a l;ke record. We have so much internal ■strife that it seems impossible for us. I suppose we have not gone far enough from our civil strife to Jet the .Dutchmen forget they arc a conquered race, and they hate tho Britisher and Jus cause accordingly—or many of them do. Now I must close, with the sincere wish that your son may bo restored to you speedily in the best of health. — Believe me- to bo. yours sincerely, E— D—.
