London, Oct. 23. A German official message says: "Tie Anglo-Fronch penetrated deeply into the defences at the southern edge of Houthulst Wood, but counter-at-tacks repulsed the enemy, whose gains were only 300 metres deep and *1200 wide. The enemy's assaults at Poelcapelle and astride the Gteluvelt road failed. The enemy's artillery fire between theAilette and Braye increased to continuous drumfire this morning. Ine French attacked at daybreak."
