RAJAH BROOKE

London, May IS. Sir Charles J. Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, is dead.
Sir Charles Johnson Brooke was the second Rajah of Sarawak, Borneo, having succeeded his uncle, the famous Sir James Brooke, in 1868. He was lorn in 1829, and in his earlier years .served in the Navy, from which he resigned in 18-51 to take up work under his iincle. lie was instrumental in restoring order in tho country and patting down head-hunting. He ruled over a population of 500,000, and a country 40,000 square miles in extent. The new Rajah is Sir Charles Brooke's son. Rajah Mudah Charier Vyner Brooke, who was born in 1874.
