TAXI DRIVER ASSAULTED.

Kamjlton, May 19. A sensational affair occurred "on the t^milton-Cambridge road yesterday, when a taxi diiver named Edward Henry Peebles was assaulted by a man named Robin Jasper Cargo, an escapee from trie Waikina Prison near Te Awan.\utu. Crago had engaged Peebles to drive him from Hamilton to Cambridge. When about 4£ miles along the road Crago said, "Ease her up," and as the car was stopping Peebles felt a string go round his neck. The string was drawn tight, and .Peebles became un-conscio-us.' The next thing he knew was that he was struggliK<r ..Avith Crago on the side of the ear. Both fell on to tin* load, Crago biting at Pee'hles's hands. .After the struggle they separated and jumped to their feet. 'Other cars tnen came up, and Crago was guarded until +De pohee arrived.

Crago .stated that it was his intention to rendor Peebles unconscious, zewe the car, and make hi s escape to Auckland.

Peebles's hands were badly lacerated, and one nail was torn otf Crago, before the Court this morning, was charged with assault and with being an oscapoo from prison. . Detective-Sergeant Coouey said that Crago was sowing'a sentence el ten years for attempted murder at Auckland.

A remand was granted for a-tveok. Crago was the actor in a sensational attempt- to steal a motor car at Dpvonport, Auckland, some years as;o, a revolver being used.
