™ London, May 17. lhero was: a preliminary Italian bombardment of 56 hours between Tolraino and the sea. Tre enemy, apparently, -expected the main attack on the" Carso and at Gorz, where they massed 1500 guns. The principal attack was on the Plava sector, where the Ison2o' runs between steep hills. The enemy held the entire left bank except the Plava bridgehead, where the Italians had established themselves early in the war, though unable to enlarge the bridgehead since. The Italian guns and trench raortars smashed the Austrian position on Sunday. The Italians bridged \l\& Isonzo be-, low Plava on Monday, and crossed uninterruptedly, though shells filled the valley.
