INCESSANT FIGHTING.
NO TRUCE OR QUARTER
GERMAN DETACHMENT ANNIHI-
LATED
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)
Pans, May. 17 The "Petit Parisian's" correspondent says there wore startling fluctuations on the British front yesterday. The fighting went on without truce and mercilessly in and around Bullecoiirt.
One German counter-attack reached part of the southern line. '• Two hundred and fifty Germans <lrunk with fury jumped, into a trench . yelling "Victory." j Suddenly the scene was changed. "Whilst part of the Australians were falling back, keeping the enemy at bay, yet drawing them further on, another body of colonials hurled themselves boldly from beyond the trench and txirned the assaulters' flank. Then the retreating Australians charged, while a copious barrage prevented the Germans intervening from Reincourt. The melee ended only when the last of the enemy had fallen. Two hundred were left dead, and the remaining fifty were pulverised in fleeing through the barrage.
