TRADE WITH THE ISLANDS
An. In.vercar.gill business man, Mr Quxnn, who has just returned from a trip to Fiji, contributes an interesting .account of his experiences to a Southlaud paper, in the course of which he refers to the enormous trade in general n<erchandiso done with the Islands, practically all of which is lost to New Zealand, "inasmuch as almost all the stocks are. drawn from Australia. A New Zealand 'commercial' is a .rarity in Fiji, and the same holds good in Samoa'and other islands of the Soutli- ; crn Pacific where trade is done. New-Zealand-grown and spun rope is also extensively used, 'hut ib is hpudit through Sydney nnd Melbourne/ This import trade of the Islands concerns all lands of groceries and general merchandise, timber, especially, hemp- at a premium in Samoa. | The 'worth whileness' of wholesale firms including; the Islands in * their travellers' circuits ip shown by a little drenmstance w"hi"h Mr Quinn relates.
