RICHMOND BOROUGH COUNCIL
A special meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held on the 14th inst. Present: Crs. Batt, Cross. Hart, Ingram, and Thorn. Cr. Win was excused from attendance on account of illness.
Mi- James Blair, acting-Town Clerk, took the chair, a.nd after a brief reference to the mournful occasion which had necessitated the meeting, called for nominations for the position*of DeputyMayor.
It -was moved by Or. Batt, seconde<l by Cr. Hart, and carried, that Cr. In- 1 gram bo appointed to the position. The Deputy-Mayor then took . the chair, and after referring to the sudden death of the Mayor (Mr Thomas Ball), which was universally regretted, instanced his kindness of heart to all in trouble, and concluded "by moving that a letter of sympathy be sent to his widow and family. This was seconded by Cr. Batt, and carried. All the councillors present bore testimony to the high character of the late Mayor, and to the loss which the district had sustained by his sudden removal.
It was moved by Or. Thorn, seconded by Cr. Batt, and carried, that Mr James Blair be appointed to act as borough treasurer until Mr Thomas returns.
It was moved by O. Thorn, seconded by Cr. Batt, and carried, that a letter be sent to the Rev. A. Ashcroft, asking him to have the hedge cut and the rubbish cleared away from the brook runing through his ground, about the condition of which he complained in a recent letter to the Council, as the brook cannot bo cleared.'out- until, such obstacles are' removed.
