SUCCESSFUL CONCERT

SALE OF MAYORESS'S FLAG

(From "The Colonist," April 27th.) There was a la^ge attendance at the Provincial Hail last evening, when a very successful concert was given in aid of the Red Cross Fund. Tie sum of £13 6s was received in entrance money. The flag presented by the Mayoress (Mrs C. J. Harley) was also disposed of. by public auction, and realised £'244 13s 6d. During an interval in the programme Bishop Sadlior, who presided, .explained that Mrs Harley had provided the material for the flag, on which signatures, obtained at one shilling each, had been worked, mostly by Miss Ewart. Tho1 committee of tho Helping Hand Shop | desired to recognise what Mrs Barley: had done, and he asked Mrs Mules to present her with a booklet containing the names of all the subscribers arranged in alphabetical order by Miss J-wiii't, and' ornamented with paintings of New Zealand flowers by Miss Nkia Jones. | In making the presentation Mrs' Mules asked Mrs. Harley to accept the j booklet as a memento of the kindly in- ' terest she had taken in the v.'.jious! war funds during the time Itor husband , 'had' been Mayor. The Mayor, on behalf of Mrs Eiariey, expressed his thanks for the presenta- • tion. It was one of the weans of raising money adopted by those working for the Red Cross. Mrs J rarle;>' had only provided the material, but ISOO signature^ had 'been obtained, f< r which nearly £100 had been raceved. Tho person who deserved the greatest credit in connection with the flag was Miss Ewart, who had worked the signatures. (Applause.) The flag was then put v.p' by auction by Mr A. M. That girl in the pretty pink bonnet: She served at a table, But seemed quite unable To see there was nothing upon it." Items were contributed to the concert programme by Mrs Jacobsen, Misses iJodds, Stapp, Leggatt, and Fairhall> Messrs P. Brady, fci. Bush, E. Short, A. G. Thompson, and E. Dirnant Selections Avero also played 'by an efficient orchestra. Misses Fairhall and Judson and Mr J. Tait played tlie accompaniments.
