SEAMAN REPORTS HER TIED UP
AT PLYMOUTH
William Palmer, second engineer of the steamer Mongolia, said at Baltimore on February 16 that the freight submarine Deutschland had been captured by the British, and that ho had seen her in Plymouth Harbour with! more than a hundred other captured German craft. Palmer said the British had captured 400 German submarines since the opening of the war, and that 187 of them, including the Deutschland, were tied up in Plymouth Harbour chained together, and. in the centre of a network of huge chains attached to buoys and wharves. Captain Koenig } commander of the subsea freighter, and his entire crew are in j English gaols, Palmer asserted. i The Mongolia sailed from New York for London on December 31 last with I a cargo of munitions, and put into Plyi mouth on January 14. She left there ion January. 27 and reached New York [again on February 7. It was while the vessel, was-at,the. English port, Palmer said, that he saw the captured submarines. The Deutschland was in a place where she, could be readily seen from shore, he declared, and the letters of her name, -which on her trips, to the United States were painted the, same colour as her hull, had been picked out in white, so she could easily be identified.
Photographs of the submarine wrapped -with the chains were on exhibition, Palmer said. He did nob learn 1.-ow the Deutschland was captured.
