PERMANENT PICTURES.

The new programme to be screened at tho Empire Theatre this evening is lieacled by a Hep worth masterpiece, a drama entitled "The White Hope." This is the story of a boxer, Jack Delaiie, called "Tlie White Hope," who by his manliness, wins the admiration and friendship of Earl Durward Carrisbrooke On the trip home from India the friendship ripens^ and Carisbrooke offers Delane a training cottage on his estate. The earl's- sister Claudia is first bored, then interested in her brother's new friend. This interest is strongly disapproved of by her grandmother, Lady Marion. In spite of this and even to Claudia's surprise love develops between the girl and the boxer. Complications occur on all sides, but in the end victory is secured by honest training and by sturdin'ess and sincerity. The plot is skilfully adapted, and the actors are entirely convincing. One word more. The boxing scenes have the unqualified approval of George. Gunther, who takes the part of the black champion, and that, of course, means that there is real fighting properly bandied. There is a most interesting supporting programme, including fine topical, dramatic, and scenic films. By special request Charlie Chaplin as "The Fireman" will be screened tins evening as an extra to a full change or' programme. Motueka will bo visited to-morrow and Richmond on Thursday night as usual. I
