Washington, through Switzerland, has demanded of Germany an explanation of why Mr Gerard was detained.

It is understood, that Britain has informed the United States that she is granting a. safe conduct to Count Bernstovff, but she ca-nnot be responsible for anything' due to Germany's disregard of International Law.
