DAMAGE TO MUNICIPAL SERVICES' AND WORKS.

A large amount- of the time at the City Council's disposal last night was occupied with consideration of matters connected with the recent floods.

The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported on the subject as follows:— -

'.'The serious damage, so far.as the Council is concerned, consists of the washing out of the sewers in Erin street, the damage to ' the pumpingmains in Trafalgar street, and a large slip on the Socks Road. ' "

"The footbridge at Hanby Park, Alton street and at the mouth of the Brook stream in. Milton Grove- are washed away. The tension rods oi: the Trafalfar street footbridge were carried away by the debris coining down the river and the structure is ./none, too safe. "Brook street' at the Gfien Stream is washed out, leaving bare room for a vehicle to pass. Otherwise the damage consisted chiefly of mud and silt deposited on the streets.

The Works Committee reported as follows ) :—The City Engineer 'reported that the pressure main and air main crossing the river near Trafalgar street oridgo had J,eon carried away by the flood : t:;.» Cmr-hiittee authorised him to repair die damage. The Committee made an inspeetioji of the damage caused by the flood, in the different parts of the pity, and have instructed the City Engineer to place extra men on_ m order t:> repair the damage as quicKly as possible.'
