COMPETITIVE DESIGNS

MR. FRANK PECK'S ACCEPTED.

A special meeting of the Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board? was held yesterday to consider competitive designs for the new Alexandra Home, which had been invited by the Board. There were present Messrs. H. Baigent (chairman), JS. S Hoult, W, Lock, W. N. Franklyn, T. Bell, and Mrs. Watson.

The instructions issued to the architects were to provide a building for the accommodation of 40 males and 10 females, and a staff of 6. cost to be about £5000, the building to be erected' on the old site.

Three designs were submitted by Jocal architects, and these were considered.

It was resolved on the motion of Mr. Lock., seconded by Mrs. Watson, that the new home be erected in brick. Before any design was accepted, the chairman suggested that the architects should be notified that it had' been decided to build in brick. ' He said it was no use adopting a plan without art estimate.

Mr. Bell said he would like to see the matter adjourned so that he could; inspect the plans. Some discussion follov/ed, Mr. FrankIyn expressing the opinion voiced hy Mr. Hoult at a previous meeting, that if the Board did not do something they, ought to be turned out.

On the motion of Mr. Lock, seconded by Mr. Franklyn, it was decided to accept one of the plans by ballot. Mr. Hoult opposed what he termed a "secret ballot," and said the plan should ne accepted in open board A ballot was then taken, and when the result was announced Mr. Franklyn moved that the design submitted W Mr. Frank Peck, of Nolson. be approved. This was seconded by Mrs Watson and carried. The chairman stated that the telegram from the Government granting the use of the Home .at Richmond forthe inmates of the Alexandra Home, should have given permission for six wee* B not six months, as appeared inthe telegram m error. It was resolved to wire to the Minister asking for the use of the building for six months, and if necessary that the chairman and Mr. Lock go to Wellington to wait on the Minister It was resolved, on Mr. Bell* motion, to thank all who had made contributions to the old people's needs . it was explained that owing to the old people being at different places a Jt lsV° f was not acknowledged m the newspapers.
