BRITISH OFFENSIVE RESUMED.

ATTACKS ON THE POZiERES-

GUELLEMONT FRONT.

AN AUSTRALIAN SUCCESS.

ANZACS ESTABLISHED IN

POZIERES

HARD FIGHTING AT LONGUEVAL.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)

Lomfera, July 23,

Sir Douglas Haig reports that the battle was resumedi with intense violence on the entire Pozieres-Guillemont

front.

Territorials and Australians attacked respectively south-west and southeast of Pozieres. The latter carried the outer German works.

Violent fighting continues in the village, the Germans resisting desperately with many machine guns.

Elsewhere on the front the fighting is equally intense.

We recaptured the whole of Longueval in the morning, but the Germans re-took the northern end. j The outskirts of Guillemont twice changed hands. Sir Douglas Haig later reports that our troops have made further progress in the neighbourhood of Pozieres. The battle on the rest of the front from Pozieres to Guillemont continues with immense violence. The afternoon despatch from the v/ar correspondents at Headquarters gives fuller details of the fighting. Following the heavy bombardment last night the British and Anzacs delivered an attack towards Posieres and Guillemont. Notwithstanding the enemy's desperate resistance, the Anzacs succeeded; in establishing themselves in Pozieres, where they are now eonsolidatHcr their line. It is reported that their casualties were comparatively light. "Westward of the village the British also successfully advanced. They found the wire entanglements I upon the right of Pozieres insufficiently de- ' stroyed, and consequently "the British progress was checked by heavy machine gun fire. Despite this we gained a footing in Guillemont, but owing to a determined counter-attack were unable to maintain the advance. Progress upon the whole front con-! tinues satisfactorily, especially in the neighbourhood of Pozieres, and also \ along the road running from the village north-westward, upon which our troops ! are reported to be established. I . The Central News' Amsterdam correspondent says that German war correspondents are puzzled by the British attacks on Promelles and south of Armentieres on" Wednesday evening, in which two strong divisions were engaged. Some consider this has introduced a new offensive and some that it preludes a serious attempt to advance towards Lille, while others think it is a mere demonstration to prevent the Germans sending troops to the menaced sectors at Hooge.
