RAIDS ON THE GERMAN
TRENCHES.
(Special Despatch from the New Zealand War Correspondent.) ;
: r ...July 17. With varying success the New ZeaMnders continue their raids (»i the enemy's trenches in the vicinity of Armentieres. A German counter-raid caused several casualties, ma inly during the enemy's preliminary bombardment? One machine-gun crew was casualtied, and buried witL the gun, but the gun was; dug out and brought into action again. : .
A _ recent attempted raid by the Maoris was unsuccessful, but .they;cleverly oittwitted a ruse by the enemy to i entrap them, and returned without' casualties. The Germans concerned ■were caught in the open by our guns and rifle fires and thrown into confusion, i suffering loss. - A party from the Rifle Biigade successfully raided the German front trench,'inflicting casualties. '.Our .'bombardment wrecked their trenches, and their dead were badly shattered. . Our casualties were slight. ' The Otago Regiment was less lucky, being canght by the enemy's fire In No Man's Land, but the splendid bravery of the officers and men made amends. Captain Jolly was wounded, and refused to go on a stretcher while his men were needing attention. Witli : great gallantry he carried on, and was | subsequently killed. His body was lo- | cated at dawn, near our parhipet, and 'brought in under cover of darkness next i night.
A private, who was under a suspended sentence of five years' penal servitude, behaved with great heroism. He was seen boldly standing up under a heavy fire, repeatedly lifting wounded men over the parapet. His sentence was remitted.; "
