GENERAL SMUTS'S PROGRESS

General Smuts's official report states that the enemy endeavoured to cut the communications north of Hardeni and also the Usunibara railway between Korogwe and Tanga, but were driven down the Pangani river. The clearance of this area proceeds satisfactorily.

A landing force under BrigadierGeneral Grewe captured Muaiiza, on the--southern shore of Lake Victoria Nyanza. The majority of the European" Germans fled by the lake southwards, our vessels pursuing them.
