RUSSIAN ADVANCE UNDER DIFFICULTIES.
AUSTRIAN RESISTANCE SOON
ENDED
(Australian and; N.Z. Cable Association)
(Received July 20, 9.10 p.m.)'
Petrograd, July 20. '
In the fight on the Lipa the Russians forced the line at three o'clock in the morning of the 16th, wading under machine gun and rifle fire through water and m.arsh above their waists,. often reaching to the armpits. >
The engineers laboured under a heavy shell fire to construct a bridge to enable the cavalry and' guns to cross in pursuit of the enemy.
Ab the Austrian end: of the bridge there was a terrible sight. The place was congested with dead, dying, and horribly wounded. Many -of the Austrians had apparently been wounded by their. own guns in attempting to prevent the.bridging of the stream.
Tho Austrians-now simply refuse to fight after the initial resistance. They prefer to surrender in blocks rather than risk being cut to pieces on the retreat.
