A NEW INVENTION

(From "The Colonist," July 1.)

Messrs F. A. Oarh'sle and B. Trathen, of this city, who for some time have been jointly interested in various ingenious devices, and have been prosecuting research, and experimenting in various ways with a view to perfectina; and placing upon the market'- certain articles which will be at once remunerative to them and to. benefit to the public, havo been ■'•most successful in producing a very handsome md particularly effective gas fire or radiator. A "Colonist" representative has been shown several designs of these heaters, three of which have been installed in Messrs Trathen .'and Co.'s premises in Trafalgar street, and has been impressed 'with their simplicity, utility, and general .appearance. -The inventors have obtained quite a new departure in gasheating, having been particularly successful' in diverting the heat Irom its natural course upwards to tho ceiling and distributing it in any, or all directions on the floor level, a problem which has in the past baffled gas fire manufacturers. The ■•-gas is consumed in a mantle contained in a glass chimney, and the most perfect combustion possible is obtained by means of .both gas. and air regulators" in the burners ; and, apart from the strong radiating power of the mantle, the heat is controlled and distributed by means of powerfiil reflectors placed in semicircles immediately behind the burners, which, as well as controlling the heat, produce a warm, cosy appearance. These radiators sre being manufactured in Messrs Carlisle and Co.'s premises in.-Hardy- street. The mantle, which is by no means the least interesting part of the-invention, being -probably the v only mantle produced in the Dominion, is also locally made. Application for jetters; patent has. been lodged toy the inventors. . - .".>V ■■ ■■:'■
