THE NEWSPAPERS AND THE CANNONADE.

AN EXPLANATION

Wo aro informed that comment is be ing made regarding the considerable amount of advertising in the newspapers done by the Silver Bullett Executive, and the space devoted to the tug-of-war has been referred to as an instance of what is evidently considered extravagance on the part of the Executive in this direction.

At the public meeting held in the] City Council Chambers the promoters1 stated that satisfactory contracts had been made with the local newspapers for advertising the Cannonade and Pad-1 dy's Market, and this was-the fact. The two newspapers agreed for a lump sum to allow the Executive a certain minimum space, and any extension of! the space 'agreed upon jvas in the nature' of a gift and at the discretion of the newspapers. As a matter of fact the J minimum agreed upon has been_ exceeded in almost every issue of'.'the'papers,': very often to the extent of double and treble the contract space. It is desired to make it perfectly plain that this is a concession by the newspapers and does not involve the Executive in one penny of expense beyond the contract. The newspapers made the concessions through sympathy with the object of the effort, and if it will re move any misconception likely to prejudice the cause we here stiif.e that the advertising so far in connection with the tug-of-war, which is part of Paddy's [Market, has not added to the expenditure of the Executive.

Further, in connection with the tugof war, attention may be drawn to the prize money announced, to which it appeals- some objection has been taken, j The greater portion of the prizes offered | is not cash, but credit slips to enable the winning teams, to operate to the stated values in connection with, the armies' fighting for hill £25,000. The greater part of the cash prizes, if not the whole, will be derived from the teams' entrance fees, and the Executive will not be at any expense in connection with the tug-of-war.
