RIWAKA.

The monthly meeting of the Riwaka School Committee was held on Monday last in. the Brooklyn school. Present f Messrs. G. H. Jefferies (chairman), S. M. Askew, J. Greensill, C. P. Fry, Alec. McLean, Arch. McLean, and W. H. Owen. Mr. E. W. James, an exmember of the committee, was also present.

The headmaster, Riwaka, . reported 114 names on the roll, with a percentage of attendance of 91.3. He pointed out certain repairs that were necessary.

The headmaster, Brooklyn, reported 120 names on the roll, with a percentage of .attendance of only 78.4. The pocy attendance was due to the prevalence of. scarlet fever in the district.

From Mr. C. R. Holyoake, stating that he considered himself justified, in keeping his children from school durthe prevalence of scarlet fever in the district.

Mr Owen referred to . the current rumours that certain • families infected with scarlet fever were not taking proper notice of the quarantine regulations, and it was unanimously resolved to bring the matter under the notice of the health officer, and also to bring the matter before the Education

Board

A request for the use of Brooklyn school by the Church of Christ was granted.

The chairman reported on the recent

visit of Mr. Spencer to the Riwaka school. (A report of his visit has already appeared in our columns.) For the present enlargement of the school was not possible.

It was resolved that the Board be advised that while the committee have of necessity to accept the inevitable, at least for the present, they are not at all satisfied1 with the result of Mr. Sp,encer,'s visit.

tt was resolved .that application be made for ventilation for Riwaka school; that the Education Board be asked if it would not be possible to draw up an agreement for the conveyance of the children of Shaggery in terms similar to that existing for the conveyance of children of Riwaka Valley, as no contractor would carry them*on the terms suge-ested .by the 'board ; and that Mr •I". W. Duncan do'the —^-lc required at Riwaka school.

Mr. E. W. James asked for the use if the schoolroom for a function to be held in aid of the Silver Bullet Cannonade, and permission was granted..

A special meeting of the Riwaka Recruiting Association was held on Tuesday last, a number of ladies also being present. .

The secretary reported receipts to date as follows:—Sale of buttons, £9 Is: donations (Silver Bullets, £130 2s. It was resolved that the balancesheet be published. The sum of £2 was voted into postage account It was resolved that a Princess be elected for Riwaka, the selection to be left in the hands of the ladies; that the secretary communicate with the centralbody, pointing out the necessity for uniformity of action in connection with the election of the Queen; that a dance be held to farewell the boys who are leavine: with the next draft, and also to obtnin Mr. Harold Williarns's services for the music.
