Sir Edward Grey's correspondence with Mr Gerard, American Ambassador at Berlin discloses the fact that Britain offered to send food sufficient for 500 civilians at Ruhleben. No reply was received.

He several times insisted that it was the Germans' duty to properly feed the prisoners, or otherwise release them. Subsequently he requested the release of all the civilians at Ruhleben in exchange for Germans interned in Britain.

American doctors reported that iruch bread from^ abroad was mouldy and hard, while "the German bread caused indigestion.
