THE MAROONED EXPLORERS.

ACTION BY SIR DOUGLAS MAWSON.

SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON GOING

TO ROSS SEA

(United Service.)

(Received July 2, 5.5 p.m.)

London, July 1

Sir Douglas Mawson states that arrangements are being made for another attempt to rescue the Elephant Island party by a steel vessel, which is the. only type available until the Aurora has been repaired. The chance of success is small.

Sir Douglas Mawson adds that everything depends upon the rapid refitting of the Aurora, and despatching her to Punta Arenas, where slie would pick up-Sir Ernest Shackleton. In that case rescue is practically certain. The Aurora would continue the voyage and pick up the Ross Sea party in January. •

Sir Ernest Shackleton announces his intention of personally proceeding to Ross Sea. It is understood that a suitable wooden whaler, apart from the Aurora, cannot be obtained. It would cost £35,000 to purchase and refit a wooden vessel in England, but the Aurora could be fitted out much earlier than this. The Aurora ncay be the means of saving the castaways.
