REMARKABLE MOTOR TRIP.

OVER TAKAKA HILLS THROUGH SNOW. - !

VISIT TO BUBU BUBU SPRINGS IN

THE RAIN.

While in the Takaka district at tho] end of last week the new buyers of the | lato Mr A. G. D. Willcocks's property} at Motupipi, which has been sold by the' Public Trustee, expressed a desire to j see the Bubu Bubu Springs, and, al-i though it was raining heavily, Mrj Hewlett, who was driving tho party, guaranteed to take them in his car on the high road to the Springs. The journey was successfully "undertaken, and it can now be said that large touring cars can be taken right up to the Springs. The visitors, who hail from South Canterbury, were amazed at the volumo of water coming . from the springs.^ They were astonished that the springs were not more booreed, for they felt convinced that if this and other sights in the district were advertised many Canterbury people would visit them, and Takakla, would becomo a tourist resort. J

On Saturday afternoon tho visitors I were returning to Nelson in tho s*ame car, with the Public Trustee and Dalgety and Co.'s representatives, and when they reached Harwood's they found the Tabaka Hills ■ covered with, snow. There was considerable speculation as to their chances of getting over the hill. However, it was decided to make the attempt. It was not a very before the travellers ran into a very severe snowstorm, and for some eight miles they travelled through heavy snow. To give «ji idea of the snow-that was falling,-it may be mentioned that the glass windscreen of the car had to bo opu-ned to allow. the driver to get a view of the road, and the snow was actually blowing into the car. The passengers, when they gob over' the hill, \\yere covered with snow^ The roadway in many places had on it 18 inches of snow, which completely hid the wheel tracks. The driver had to hug the bank, and trust there wore no washouts. It was extremely hard pulling on tho car, and slow work getting to the top of-the hill. The bush looked magnificent with its heavy mantle of snow, and the travellers were thus rewarded for their risky trip. On reaching Motueka some small boys rushed the car to get the snow that was still on it, and at once commenced snowballing There was actually snow on the •footboards of "the car on its arrival at Nelson. .
