THE SITUATION REVIEWED.
SPASMODIC SUBMARINE
CAMPAIGNS
VIGILANCE OF BRITISH NAVY
London, April 16,
Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge, in a.n article in the "Sunday Times" reviewing the commerce raiding for the nineteen months end<?d Mairch 23rd, says that the enemy destroyed less than 4 per cent, of oiir steamers and slightly over 6 per cent, of f, our ;tortnage. The French losses were a little of 4 per cent, in number, and 7i/; per cent, in tonnage. The Russian losses were under 4 per cent, and 5 per cent, respectively. On the other hand the new tonnage more than made up our lasses, likewise those of our Allies'. It was noticeable that the spasmodic activity of raiders was usually. followed by a lull, chiefly due to our Navy's vigilance and enterpi-ise, which had made the failure of the present raiding campaign as complete' as the former.
