THE APPLE INDUSTRY.

STOPPING THE WASTAGE

The fruit-industry and those associated with it are thoroughly alive to the pressing needs of the moment. Steps have been taken to secure Government assistance in the matter of finding markets and granting what further assistance .is ifacessary.. To this end Mr. A. H. Mazure, Vine and Wine Instructor of the Department of Agriculture, Wellington, gave a demonstration of cider making at the Horticultural Show at Stoke,.on Saturday afternoon. Mr. A. P. Allport introduced the lecturer, and in doing so, stressed the point that the fruit industry needed organising so that they could utilise the present waste products. Mr. Mazure commenced his demonstration by remarking that orchardists did not realise the money that could be made out of what was now waste fruit. There was cider making, evaporating and pulp manufacture. Some big orchardists in Australia had given up growing fruit for export and were usingtheir own crops, besides buying largely from others, in the making of cider. There were fifteen cider-making companies in Australia turning out thousands of gallons daily. It was a most important branch of the industry. MrV Mazure then proceeded to demonstrate how the cider was made, but stated th& plant was a very old one, thus making the process appear more cumbersome than is the case with up-to-date machinery.

As the question is of such importance to the whole district it was felt that Mr Mazure should reserve his further remarks dealing with costs and other important points until the growers of the district could meet together. It tvas mention that Mr. H. G. Hill was addressing fruitgrowers at Stoke to-night, and this gentleman readily fell in with the idea of uniting with Mr. Mazure. As Mr. Hill's scheme includes the establishment of a cider and vinegar plant it is fortunate that Mr. Mazure is in the district so as to jnvo expert advice. Growers should not fail to attend in large numbers.
