crawled on all fours and completely sur-
prised the Turks. The latter used rockets and searchlights, but these were useless in the thick snowstorm.
The snow-covered Russians, who were
invisible, fell on the enemy with the bayonet. Panic seized the Turks, who had not believed the attack possible. The Russians remorselessly pushed on^ and soon the whole Turkish army of
100 battalions was on the ran, Mounted
Cossacks fresh from Manchuria, swept the country, cutting down the fugitives and digging prisoners out of hiding
places in the villages. Hundreds of frozen groups huddled together for warmth, died as they slept.
