THE BARALONG INCIDENT.
STR- EDWARD GREY'S MEMORAN- ! DUM.
(Received Jan. 7, .11.45 p.m.)
New York, Jan. 7
| The newspapers comment that tho British note on the Baralong case dees not deny the facts contained in the affidavits of the Americans on board the
Nicosian. They point out that the broad hints contained in the German note are apparently intended to convey a threat that Germany would consider the absence of punishment of the alleged perpetrators by tho British Government a full excuse for reprisals.
The newspapers also publish a London message declaring that it is believed the nest step is expected to take the -form of the shooting of a number lof imprisoned British officers and men equalling those lost in the submarine 'which the Baralong sank.
It is considered unlikely that Germany will accept Sir Edward Grey's suggestion of an investigation by American naval officers.
