A private hotel is to be erected in Bridge street, on land adjoming Mr. Fairey's promises, for Mr. A\ . WiUcen-s. Preliminary work was begun yesterday, and the contractors hope to ■ have tho bmlding .ready for occupation by iSovember. The plans provide for a commodious nv.icfc structure of 40 moms, with an attractive front elevation. Building operations in Nelson havo been maintained-in a satisfactory manner despite the war, and Mr Milkens s enterprise will.assist in keeping tradesmen employed. The contractors ar«. Messrs. A furtijeT improvement in beinp: made to the Commercial Hotel by the demolition oi the portion of the premises in Trafalgar street which was formerly the Ma.snruc Ds>.H. Messrs. Leaper Bros have in hand a contract to replace .this .with a, brick addition to tho hotel.

At the monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Permanent Building .Society hfcld last evening, Mr. P. Bond iwas re-electetl Chairman,.of Directors, and the retiring members of committees were also re-elected as follows: Survey Committee, Messrs. W. Bethwaite, S. F Bolton and J.: C.
